Position title: Senior counselor

Responsible to:

Program Associate for Camps and the Committee on Camping for the Presbytery of South Dakota.

Length of position:

8 weeks preferably, length of time is negotiable. One week can be negotiated during the summer, given for high school camp or tri-ennium. This period will begin in early June with staff training, and end in late July with camp cleanup and a staff banquet/appreciation dinner.

Qualifications:

A Resident Counselor should be a believer in Jesus Christ who?

  • Has a growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ and whose life reflects that commitment.
  • Attends worship regularly, is involved in a congregation's ministry, and studies the Bible.
  • Possesses strong character and demonstrates the ability to make good decisions.
  • Exhibits high ethical and moral standards (i.e. must agree to abstain from activities that would not reflect a lifestyle mirroring that of a follower of Christ.).
  • Relates well to peers, is enthusiastic, is willing to lead, and has the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Has demonstrated an interest in cultivating a relationship with campers of all ages.
  • Has completed two or more years of college.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check
  • Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for the conduct, activities, health, and general needs of campers in their living quarters
  • Serve as a small group leader (with the support of other counselors) being responsible for the daily study, worship, fellowship and recreation, service, or mission of a group of 10-15 campers
  • Understand and live the goals and aims of a Biblically grounded faith and the camping program.
  • Abide by the policies and procedures set forth by the Program Associate and the Committee on Camping for the Presbytery of South Dakota.
  • Set an example as a Christian leader by refraining from activities that would not reflect a follower of Christ.
  • Encourage campers to have good personal habits by setting an example in the following areas: getting to bed on time, waking promptly, being at meals on time, personal cleanliness, good table manners, etc;
  • Meet daily with the Volunteer Dean and fellow summer camp staff for prayer, worship, study, and/or discussion of various camp related topics
  • Meet weekly with the Program Associate and Head Counselor for planning and evaluation
  • Benefits/Compensation:

    Paid bi-monthly, with the rate being $100 per week which includes staff training week2. Time off during the summer will include at least 2 hours off each day, and will include at least twenty-four (24) hours off (one fully day). 2If junior staff are hired for a partial summer, they will be hired at a weekly rate of $100 per week. Junior counselors will be required to attend staff training week.
